No GFP signal was detected outside the visual pathway. In the lateral geniculate nucleus, the GFP signal did not colocalize with cellular bodies of neurons, astrocytes, or oligodendrocytes, as confirmed by immunofluorescent staining using the specific markers, NeuN, GFAP, and Olig2, respectively (Supplementary Figure S1). This result suggests that the GFP signal was present only in nerve fibers that are the axonal projections of ganglion cells in the retina. The animals were killed at 2 months after the injection, and the brains were removed and cut into 100 coronal slices and examined for GFP expression using laser scanning confocal microscopy.
